What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario and as such, all of our massage treatments at the Paisley Spa are performed by Registered Massage Therapists (RMT).  Massage Therapy is the assessment and treatment of the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, fasciae) and joints of the body. Massage Therapy improves health by promoting circulation, normal movement and alignment of the body.  Massage Therapy has been shown to decrease pain, improve movement of joints and soft tissues of the body, enhance circulation of blood and lymph, promote a sense of relaxation and well being, and improve quality of sleep.

It is important to check with the doctor before beginning a course of massage therapy, especially if you are seeking treatment for a specific ailment.  It may be required to have a doctor’s note in order to be covered by an Extended Health Care Insurance.  Massage therapy is covered by most insurance companies, motor vehicle accident insurers, WSIB and Veterans Association.

RELAXATION MASSAGE  This message is for the purpose of rest and relaxation, improve circulation, the range of motion, and relieve minor muscle pain.

MEDICAL MASSAGE   Medical massage and joint mobilization focus on maintaining limber joints and good muscle tone. This massage tends to be a little deeper than relaxation massage and the body is usually moved around in different degrees of motion in order to increase the range of motion.

REHABILITATIVE MASSAGE  This massage focuses on healing injury.  This is a very deep massage which can leave the client with a bruised feeling for 24-48 hours after the massage.  If the client is on blood thinners, some bruising may occur.  After the initial 2 days, the client will feel more range of motion and a release in pain.  An increase in water to flush the toxins and a hot Epsom salt bath for a couple of days post massage will ease with any discomfort following a rehabilitative massage.
